The Varadero Marathon is a very special sport event held in the Caribbean paradise with lots of sunshine and fantastic beaches in a beautiful country like Cuba.
The first edition of the International Half Marathon in Varadero was held on April 15 2018.
The International Varadero Marathon is a very special sport event organised in the Caribbean, a paradise where the sun always shines and dream beaches in the gorgeous country Cuba.
Organised by the Cuban Athletics Federation with the head of Organisation Committee Alberto Juantorena and composed of Olimpic Medall Winners Ana Fidelia Quirot, Javier Sotomayor, Caridad Colon, Dayron Robles and Jorge Luis Aguilera.
There are 2 types of races, running and skate Marathon, with 3 distances each, 10K, 21K, 42K and also a non-competitive race of 3K, Fun Run.
This is an unique and first class event in which the participants enjoy running in paradisiacal environment together with Olimpic Champions and other elite runners from the International Athlectics like Timothy Kiplagat, who finished in second place in the Marathon of Tokio 2023 with 02:02:55 and participated in the Half Marathon of Varadero two times (2018 and 2019).

The Half Marathon’s current record was set by the Kenyan athlete Timothy Kiplagat 1:02:51. In the female ranking the record belongs to the Ethiopian Enatnesh Alamrew Tirusew 1:20:36
Alberto Juantorena (Cuba 1950), living legend of the athletic world championship, was the first athlete in history to win the 400m and the 800m at the Olympic Games in Montreal. This has never happened again up to today.
Alberto is the ambassador and promoter of the marathon, which is one of his most important personal and professional goal to achieve. Nowadays he is an active member of the marathon organization.

The Varadero International Marathon allows runners to run on a flat circuit. The race starts and finishes in the Central Park (8000 Taquillas) in the city of Varadero. It goes in its first kilometer along the First Avenue, leaving the famous ‘Josone Park ‘ on the right.
When the race has covered 2 kilometers, it goes to the South Highway (Arenas Blancas) towards Matanzas until 24 Street where the race turns to the South Highway again towards Bahia Blanca (First Avenue). Here the runners will enjoy the amazing views of Bahía de Cardenas.
Afterwards at Km.14 the race joins the Kawama Avenue turning back at Km.16 to Caleta Beach and First Avenue, finishing in the Central Park.

Where First Avenue and South Highway join, the race turns 180 to First Avenue. Approximately at Km 6,700 on Kawama Avenue the race turns another 180• to Novoforma. From here the race continues on First Avenue until it finishes in Central Park (8000 Taquillas)
Once the Half Marathon and the 10K race are over, children and adults of all ages can run the Popular race. After the race, as in previous editions (if COVID-19 conditions allow us) there will be a celebration party with a Cuban orchestra, drinks and food stands. Runners of different nationalities will enjoy a unique race in paradise.

To run the Half Marathon in Varadero you have to be over 18 years and over 16 years for the 10K race. The popular race does not have an age limit.
